Prairie Creek and Fern Canyon

Date:

Participants:
Michael (Dad), Patricia (Mom), Rebekah, Daniel, Elisabeth, and Hannah Gent; Chris Panza; Jared Hilligoss; Kaitlyn Seimer; Betsy and Claire Gross.

Beginning our hike in thick redwoods at the park headquarters, we hiked three miles to Zig-Zag Trail 2. About halfway through this we came out of the redwoods into heavy undergrowth.
Going up Zig-zag 2, we hiked along friendship ridge and then dropped down to the beach near Ossagon Rocks, where we had our first real rest.
After climbing the rocks (well I did anyways), throwing some cactus like flowers at each other, and finding several large feathers we re-began our hike.
This section of trail ran parallel to the beach, but under the lee of the hill, which made for pleasant walking and pretty views. Not too far along we began to see elk, but lucky for us they were staying away from the trial (I've had to make lengthy detours to avoid walking through herds of them in the past).

The final part of the Coastal Trail led past several waterfalls, which made for nice places to stop for pictures or whatnot.

After going through a little more prairie, we came across a photographer (presumably) who seemed to think that the combination of feathers, flower wreaths, and such was "too funny to miss," so he snapped a few pictures and made off before anybody had time to react. Not long after we arrived at Fern Canyon.
Staying a short amount of time to admire the scenery, we than finished of our trip by hiking down the James Irvine Trail back to the car.
Recommendation:
One of the best hikes in northern California. Fern canyon is a must see for everybody who can.
